Respect dare series – day 32– Love first

1 Corinthians 12:29-13:3

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts.

And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Song of Songs 8:12

My vineyard, my very own, is before me; you, O Solomon, may have the thousand, and the keepers of the fruit two hundred.

Love is the highest aim. If we don’t have love, everything else is vain nothingness. It, therefore, makes sense to pursue love. Paul goes on in 1 Corinthians 13 to redefine love for his culture. Our culture also needs love redefined. Glenn and I are part of this redefinition.

We are called to be light and salt for this world and one of the ways we are to do this is through our marriage. I know that this cannot be achieved solely by our own strength, willpower, or desire. We must call on our Father to start the work in our heart and bring it to completion in our actions. I earnestly desire to follow the way of love as Christ modelled – laying down His life for us, so I lay down my life for Him.

My action for today: Pursue the way of love. This is a pursuit that starts in heartfelt prayer.  Ask God to transform my heart to walk in the way of love. Seek to model a marriage built on love. Seek to model a family life built on love. Stand as a light in the darkness of this world.

Today, I am thinking of the articles that have come out after the event of Hugh Heffner’s passing (here’s one). Whilst he was alive I prayed for his soul and the destruction of his pornographic business empire. Now he has past, it is too late for his soul, but I continue to pray for those sucked into his world of decay and ruin. I pray for breaking of the bonds of slavery to pornographic addiction that knows only lust. I pray for healing of the lives and families being destroyed by it. I pray for love to win.

My prayer for today:  Father, grant me patience and kindness. Make my heart encouraging and free of envy, conceit, pride and arrogance. Help me to lay down my life for others. Let me take on the role of a servant; a slave of Christ. Let me be joyful always, not irritable or resentful. Let me rejoice always with the truth. Enable me to bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, and endure all things by resting in your love and Spirit. By your blood, break the bonds that tie so many to lust that steals rather than gives. Build up your church in love and faithfulness. In Christ’s mighty name, Amen.
