Respect dare series – day 20 – Love is not arrogant

1 Corinthians 13:4b-5a

. . .love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.

I feel like this should have been obvious, but it really has taken Glenn and I a while to get this fact: we are better together than separately. Glenn and I both have the teaching gift to varying degrees. We both enjoy teaching. And we’re both *ah-hem*, a little proud.

Because we have very similar gifts we let envy, comparison, pride and arrogance enter into our hearts. It took a lot of head banging (yes, we’re also both stubborn and assertive) to realise that God didn’t put us together for one to out compete the other. God put us together to be a team, to work together, and to be better as a whole than as two parts. Seems obvious, I know. I feel a little bit silly now.

My action for today: In this season it is a little hard to imagine giving a teaching together due to our little guy, but we are going to try. Glenn will obviously have to bear the brunt of the load, but I’m going to try chipping in during his teachings. We’ve come to realise we both have different strengths even within the gifting of teaching and we want to start pulling these together to make a strong whole.

My prayer for today: Thank you, Father, for discipling us. Thank you that you continue refining and shaping us into your image. I pray that you will keep using Glenn to sharpen me, and vice versa. Help us to see the third way when we have opposing views, and the new being (two become one) that we have become in marriage. Help us to see how perfectly you have put us together as a couple. Help us to mould our strengths together and support each other in our weaknesses. Let us put arrogance, envy, striving and competition aside. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Romans 15:5-6

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
