The Others

In the weeks after our wedding we have had some time to reflect on the events that went before it. During our engagement season we were overwhelmed by the excitement others had for us when we were looking forward to the finish line. We were done with preparations, organising, and legwork. We wanted the day to have arrived so that we could get on with life together. It was the joy and excitement that others had for us that helped us to remember the commitment we were about to make and the joy of the season we were in.

By the time of the engagement my heart was settled and I had peace that Glenn was God’s perfect choice for me; not that our marriage will be fairy-tale perfect, but that God brought us together and His grace will carry us through any bumps that come our way. I tell you this so that it might sound a little less odd that in the lead  up to our wedding I spent a lot of time thinking about our community, rather than my hubby-to-be.

In the month leading up to our marriage God had me focusing on “the others”. Throughout the book Song of Songs in the Bible is the voice of the “Others”. They celebrate with the couple, joyous for the love between them. They help the couple and encourage them. The others talk to the couple about their relationship and about relationships in general. Advice is exchanged both ways. The book shows that extra joy and safety is found when relationships take place in community.

Glenn and I were blessed to see our community come to the forefront in the lead up to our wedding day. We are encouraged to see this community continuing their support of us in these early days of our marriage.

Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us, encouraged us, and kept us focused on the reason for the wedding rather than the administrative details. We are blessed to have you in our lives. Thank you for sharing in the joy of our engagement and marriage.

Some of our “others”

An example of the Others sharing in the joy of the couple (Songs 5:1):

He: I came to my garden, my sister, my bride, I gathered my myrrh with my spice, I ate my honeycomb with my honey, I drank my wine with my milk.

Others: Eat, friends, drink, and be drunk with love!
