Eggs, carrots, and coffee – sounds like a strange combination to me and I’m enjoying eggs, coffee, and tomatoes for breakfast at the moment. I recently read a post that challenged my attitudes and it talks of these three ingredients. An analogy is given by a grandmother to her granddaughter, whose husband has cheated on her. The Grandma puts eggs, carrots, and coffee in boiling water and then looks at each one with her granddaughter. This grandmother is as wise as my grandma!
How does a carrot respond to the hot water? It softens.
How would an egg respond? It is protected by its shell for a little while, but gradually hardens.
And the coffee? Mmm, delicious!
The one that went in strong, came out soft and weak.
The one that went in soft, eventually became hard.
The one that went in as itself – changed the water!
We all have challenges in our lives. We will have people who disappoint us, events happen that test us, and situations arise that frustrate us. When they are once-offs we can stand strong-willed like a carrot, or remain soft like an egg. Our character is tested when they are not once-offs. The real measurements come when the situation, people, or events are ongoing, seemingly circular, or will take time to resolve and heal.
It is hard to change the water and we can only do so in the strength and love of God. It will not be us, but the aroma of Christ working through us, that will bring change. It is finding safety, protection, and strength in God that will allow us to remain true to ourselves whilst bringing love to the trial. Root yourself in the Spirit and His Word. Allow Him to be your defender when the boiling water is poured over you, and your Protector when you find yourself thrown into a pot.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. Psalm 20:7-8
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35-39
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. 2 Corinthians 2:14-16
