History of the War – the Invisible Children

For those present on Sunday night at Albany Creek Uniting Church, we watched the DVD “Invisible Children: Rough Cut”. The documentary captures in graphic detail the effect of the rebel war in Northern Uganda. It was filmed by 3 young Americans who went to Africa searching for a story. What they found affected them so much that they could not forget, they could not return home and do nothing.

The documentary reveals the fear that reigned during the 20 years the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) was in Northern Uganda. Children from remote villages commuted every night to sleep on verandas in towns, or within hospitals if they could find space. If they stayed at home they risked being abducted and forced to commit atrocities as children soldiers. The documentary forces one to step way outside the comfort zone of most but for that same reason, if you have not seen it, I highly recommend it.

For those of you who did see the documentary or are curious about knowing more, you can read more about the history of the war by going to the Invisible Children website:

Having watched the documentary my mind was drawn to the Scriptures and what God says about children. He places such worth on each child and especially the orphaned. Surely if God places such value on them then we must too. And if we are called to uphold justice for them then the next question we must ask is “what must I do?” For one, we can talk about it. We can share with others what we know – spread the word. We can seek more information so that we are informed about what is going on. We can take the question to God and ask Him what He would have us do…

God commands justice for the orphaned:

  • Exodus 22:22 “You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.”
  • Deuteronomy 10:18 He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow
  • Deuteronomy  24:17 “You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless…”
  • Deuteronomy 27:19 “‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.'”
  • Psalms 68:5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.
  • Psalms 82:3 “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.”
  • Isaiah 1:17 “…learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”
  • James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

God places great value on children:

  • Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children…”
  • Matthew 18:3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
  • Matthew 9:14 but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”
